The drivers are very stable, easy to install and compatible with all versions of Windows 32/64-bit, Mac, Linux. Preferred serial driver chip: Maxim, Exar or NI. The serial driver chip is what is actually communicating and providing the power signals for your device connected to the USB to serial adapter.

The Thunderlinx USB to Serial adapter is most probably the most well known USB to serial adpater that uses the FT231X processor. This USB to Serial adapter converts serial data to USB data and vice versa. There are a few advantages to this newer technology as have been explained below and may be of interest to you if you are in a complex environment.
FT231X USB to Serial Adapter
- There is also the ability to add additional power to the adapter neing a 5V DC on pin 9 and it is limited to around 450mA which will not damage your USB port if something goes wrong. Data transfer rates are up to 921,600 bps (auto detection of data speed + (up to 3 Mbps by using alising)), multiple indication LED lights as well as being USB.
- It was one of the earliest computer communication devices, used to attach teletypewriters for an operator console. It was also an early hardware system for the Internet. The electric signaling levels are handled by a driver circuit external to the UART. Two common signal levels are RS-232, a 12-volt system, and RS-485, a 5-volt system.
- The USB to serial adapter using the FT232RL is well tested and it is compatible with most serial devices on the market and has been tested with several GPS and PDA devices such as Garmin, Mallagan as well as the Palm. Note also that the USB to serial adpater is USB port powered with auto detection of data speed.
You will note that the FT231X processor which is manufactured by FTDI Semiconductors is a much newer as well as a much optimised version of the rather popular FT232RL processor. This processor is more reliable as well as having the ability to access the memory as well as address it as the processor uses MTP memory and no EEPROM. The LED lights up when connected to the USB port. There is also the ability to add additional power to the adapter neing a 5V DC on pin 9 and it is limited to around 450mA which will not damage your USB port if something goes wrong. Data transfer rates are up to 921,600 bps (auto detection of data speed + (up to 3 Mbps by using alising)), multiple indication LED lights as well as being USB port powered makes for a great FT231X USB to serial adapter.
